Introduction to Biblical References

In the Bible, we find many references to things which could be taken as examples of the use of futuristic technology or the intervention in human affairs by an extraterrestrial power. Should we take these instances as absolute proof that aliens have visited Earth in the past and had their doings recorded in the Bible? No.

These examples are not well-documented. They are brief and in many cases inaccurate or apocryphal. They must be taken as simply another piece of the UFO mystery. Why then, are these Biblical references included in this product? Because in any research we must consider each piece of evidence, no matter how insignificant or misleading. It is our intention to suggest one possible explanation for some of the miraculous events recorded in the Bible. Readers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions from the information presented. Wherever possible, we have included biblical text to support the conclusions.

This text comes from the King James version of the Bible. / Ezekiel's Wheel Over the centuries, the description of the vision given by Ezekiel and reported in the Bible has been read, scrutinized, analyzed and generally debated to death. The only fact at our disposal is that the story is recorded in the Bible. Was it a vision of God?

Was it, as some have theorized, simply the misidentification of atmospheric phenomena? Was it a futuristic flying vehicle? Clearly, Ezekiel saw something, but the truth of the matter is lost to history. We can now only speculate. following is the full text of Ezekiel chapter one and our analysis including various theories of what was actually seen by the prophet.

From the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel, chapter 1, verses 1 - 28: 1:

Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar that the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.

2: In the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of king Jehoiachins captivity,

3: The word of the Lord came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the Lord was there upon him.

4: And I looked, and, behold a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire enfolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.

5: Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man.

6: And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings.

7: And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.

8: And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings.

9: Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.

10: As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.

11: Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.

12: And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went.

13: As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.

14: And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning.

15: Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces.

16: The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel.

17: When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went.

18: As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four.

19: And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.

20: Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them, for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.

21: When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.

22: And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creatures was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above.

23: And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side their bodies.

24: And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings.

25: And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their wings.

26: And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.

27: And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about.

28: As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.

Ezekiel goes into some detail about what he saw, but what was it? He seems to be describing it to the best of his ability, he was, after all, not an engineer. He may have been having some type of hallucination or experiencing a psychological event of kind, but there are two technical explanations:

1: A Parhelion. This atmospheric phenomenon is caused by ice crystals refracting the light of the sun. A similar condition causes a ring to be seen around the moon during the winter months. Under proper circumstances, two rings, one inside the other, can be seen. Sun dogs can also be caused by ice crystals and could be seen at the same time.

It is possible that it was a combination of these phenomena that Ezekiel was referring to. The only problem we see in this explanation is that Ezekiel refers to living creatures, wings, the hands of a man under the wings. He also talks about the creatures being lifted up and the wheels lifting up and the noise of the wings like the noise of great waters. Hardly the kinds of things that ice crystals are likely to do.

2: Some type of flying vehicle. In 1968, a NASA engineer designed a craft based upon his interpretation of Ezekiel's vision. Although the design is brilliant in concept and would fly well, it is based on 1968 technology and does not take into account several items that Ezekiel mentions. It is logical to assume that any flying craft present in Ezekiel's day and likely manned by beings from an advanced civilization would employ technology well in advance of our own.

Here then, is our interpretation of what Ezekiel saw:

Let us assume, for the sake of argument, that Ezekiel was seeing a mechanical flying machine and not simply experiencing a daydream or hallucination. To begin with, he describes four living creatures which have the likeness of a man. They appear to have four faces and four wings. Two of the wings stretch upward and are attached to wings of other of the living creatures. The other two cover the body. Two of these 'wings' might have been structural supports attached to the 'bodies' and the other two which cover the body might be panels which cover machinery.

In verse 24 he says that:

'when they stood, they let down their wings'. When the machine was not moving, or had landed, the panels were lowered. Perhaps this is the reason that he calls them 'living'. He sees a mechanical device moving panels (raising and lowering wings) and he believes it to be alive- a 'living creature'. He describes each living creature as having four faces, that of a man, an eagle, an ox and a lion. This is a cryptic passage, but it may be as descriptive as Ezekiel could manage.

Perhaps the nostrils of these faces were, in actuality, downward facing thrusters. The lion face, might indicate a mass of tubes or conduits which resemble a mane. The eagle face might indicate an atmospheric fin which resembles a beak. He also describes the feet as being like those of a calf. That would be thin and tubular, maybe a type of landing pad or structural stabilizer. The wheels are the main feature that seems to have fascinated Ezekiel.

In verse 16:

he describes them as being the color of beryl. This might be yellow or green. He also says that they have the appearance of a wheel within a wheel. This has been interpreted in many ways over the years. The simplest solution might be a wheel with a central hub. It could also be a description of an axleless wheel which rotates around an inner rim.

In verse 20:

he states the following: "..and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the creatures was in the wheels." He is referring to the wheels moving up over against the "living creatures". This sounds remarkably similar to the action of the landing gear of a modern aircraft. Imagine the wheels retracting on takeoff and extending during landing. The "spirit of the creatures" in the wheels seems to indicate that maybe the parts of the landing pod which performed the most movement were the wheels themselves.

In verse 22:

Ezekiel describes the likeness of the firmament stretched over their heads and having the colour of the terrible crystal. Is this a description of some type of clear canopy? He goes on to describe a throne which sits above the firmament and on this throne is a man. Is this the control chair for the craft and a description of the person flying it? Again, pure speculation, but it is one possible answer.

Conclusion:

Again, the only fact that we have is that this event is recorded in the Bible. We can only assume that Ezekiel was reporting what he saw as accurately as he could, using the language of his day. It is also plausible that Ezekiel was experiencing a type of hallucination or daydream. If, in fact, this was a futuristic flying vehicle, it would indicate that Earth has been visited by an advanced civilization in biblical times, but this is by no means the only conclusion which can be drawn from the information at hand.

Elijah's Ascent into heaven. Elijah was a prophet who ascended into heaven on a whirlwind. He had known beforehand that he would be lifted into heaven so that the appearance of a chariot of fire and fiery horses was no surprise to him. What kind of vehicle was this? There is no way to know, however, it is another example of possible futuristic technology being used in biblical times.

From the book of Second Kings, chapter two, verse eleven:

11: And it came to pass, as they (Elijah & Elisha) still went on, and talked, that, behold, [there appeared] a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. It is interesting to note that prior to his departure, he had parted the waters of a river by smiting them with his mantle (A wide strip of cloth similar to a scarf).

After he left, his companion, Elisha picked up the mantle which he had left and used it himself to part the waters and re-cross the river. The idea being that the spirit of Elijah had been transferred to Elisha.

It is more likely that Elijah's mantle had some special properties of its own. The only thing said about the chariot of fire and fiery horses in the Bible is that they appeared. This leaves us no real information to go on, but, the main idea here is that Elijah left by ascending into heaven. He went up into the sky on board a flying chariot thousands of years before man had discovered flight. Was it a rocket ship? A helicopter?

Conclusion:

It is reported in the Bible that the prophet Elijah ascended into heaven aboard a chariot of fire. Lets assume, first of all, that this was some type of flying vehicle. The other interesting thing about this episode is the prophet himself. He had knowledge that no one of his time should have had. Perhaps this vehicle was his own private flying machine. The only person who witnessed this event was Elisha who left, taking Elijah's mantle with him. Was this a story invented by Elisha to explain something he did not understand? The information is too limited to support a conclusion.

Exodus of the Children of Israel from Egypt The story of the exodus from Egypt provides a fascinating example of possible use of technology in biblical times. From the book of Exodus, chapter 13, verses 21 - 22: 21

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night.

22: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, [from] before the people. The most striking thing about the description of the pillars of cloud and fire is how closely they resemble the exhaust left by the lift-off of a modern rocket or space shuttle. During a night launch, the trail of exhaust resembles a pillar of fire and provides bright lighting to the ground below.

During a day launch, the exhaust trail resembles a pillar of cloud. Could it be that the Israelites were led by a flying vehicle supported by rocket motors?. This is but one explanation, but in the context presented here, it could easily be seen as another example of futuristic technology used in the Bible. Another interesting feature of the pillar is its movement as seen here:

From the book of Exodus, chapter 14,verses 19 - 20: 19:

And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face and stood behind them. 20 And it came between the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness [to them], but it gave light by night [to these]: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

Here we see that the pillar of cloud and fire must be small enough to be easily mobile as it moves from in front of the Israelites to come between them and the Egyptians. It is also able to cause darkness to one side and light to another.

Conclusion:

The hypothesis that this was some type of flying vehicle seems easy to support with the description of the pillar given in the Bible. By day, a pillar of cloud or smoke, by night, a pillar of fire; the similarity to rocket exhaust is striking. The entire story of the exodus of the Children of Israel from Egypt is littered with reports of miraculous events. We must be careful to bear in mind that much of what was written was used to enhance the story in the first place. We can not be sure of the accuracy of any explanation.

Moses' encounter with God on Mount Sinai and his subsequent return to the Israelites is an interesting case to study.

From the book of Exodus, chapter 19, verses 16 - 24: 16:

And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightning's, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

17: And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

18: And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

19: And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.

20: And the Lord came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

21: And the Lord said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the Lord to gaze, and many of them perish.

22: And let the priests also, which come near the Lord, sanctify themselves, lest the Lord break forth upon them.

23: And Moses said unto the Lord, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.

24: And the Lord said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the Lord, lest he break forth upon them. In these passages is described the descent of the Lord to the top of mount Sinai and a brief conversation with Moses.

Notice how verses 16 and 18 describe the thunder and lightning as well as the quaking of the mountain. Is this a description of the landing of a great vehicle upon the mountain? Thundering rocket motors would certainly cause the type of effects noted in these passages. Another interesting feature is the fact that Moses must wait for an "all clear" signal, the sounding of a trumpet, before he can climb the mountain to speak with God.

This might be for Moses' safety, keeping him out of the way until the ship had landed and had been secured from flight. It is also reiterated that the people as well as the priests must stay away. They are not to come near the mount to gaze at God.

If this truly was a case of extraterrestrial intervention, they would want to keep the contamination of the culture as limited as possible. Doing all of their work through a single individual acting as a liaison. Does this mean that Moses and the children of Israel had been helped by an extraterrestrial force? That is one theory. But, we must remember that the record of these events is sketchy at best. After Moses has spoken with God, and is returning to the children of Israel, there is a final bit of interesting information.

From the book of Exodus, chapter 34, verses 29 - 35: 29:

And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.

30: And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.

31: And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them.

32: And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him in mount Sinai.

33: And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vale on his face.

34: But when Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.

35: And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses and the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

Conclusion:

It is reported here that Moses' face shone after his conversation with God. Does this mean that his face was sunburned, or is there a glowing effect, or some other phenomenon? The most plausible answer is that he was up on the mount at high altitude and simply was sunburned.

Would a simple case of sunburn be enough to frighten Aaron and the children of Israel? Moses was so self-conscious that he wore a vail over his face. What is being described here? We simply don't have enough reliable information to be able to draw an accurate conclusion.

A star in the East The story of the three wise men who came to worship the baby Jesus, contains an interesting piece of information. The star which they followed to Bethlehem, has, for centuries, been the topic of biblical investigation.

From the book of Luke, chapter 2, verse 9: 9:

When they (the three wise men) heard the king, they departed; (Jerusalem) and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

The information we get from this verse seems to indicate that the three wise men followed a light in the sky from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. Was the star always stationary over Bethlehem, or did it move, leading the wise men? Were they actually fooled by the planet Venus or the conjunction of Jupiter and one or more of the outer planets?

There is an effect caused by the movement of clouds which may help to clear up the mystery surrounding the star. At night, as clouds move across the sky, due to the lack of reference points, any bright object such as a star or planet will appear to be moving as the clouds sweep across it. This optical illusion could have been what made the three wise men believe that they were following a moving star.

Sodom & Gomorrah In Genesis chapter 19 there is a vivid description of the destruction of the cities of Sodom & Gomorrah.

From the book of Genesis, chapter 19, verse 1: 1:

And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; Lot is visited by two angels of the Lord who issue a command.

From the book of Genesis, chapter 19, verses 12 - 15: 12:

And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place.

13: or we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it.

14: And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

15: And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, Take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. After telling his family that they must leave because the city will be destroyed, Lot is believed to be joking. In the morning, the angels get Lot to hurry and leave. Why is there so much pressure to leave? Why was Lot and his family chosen. Why did the angels not use some power to get Lot out of the city?

In verse 17, Lot is told to flee for his life and not look behind him. Then, as the Lot family is leaving, the destruction begins.

From the book of Genesis, chapter 19, verses 24 - 26: 24:

Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;

25: And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

26: But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Conclusion:

Here we have the description of fire and brimstone raining down upon Sodom and Gomorrah. Is it possible that some alien force had grown unhappy with the behavior of people of these cities and therefore destroyed them? Why was Lot's wife turned to stone? What actually happened here? One suggested explanation is that a nuclear device was detonated, causing the destruction reported in the Bible.
