Potentially the most challenging and bizarre element of the UFO field is the Alien Abduction Syndrome (AAS), wherein thousands of people claim to have been taken aboard a flying saucer-like craft by diminutive humanoid entities, where they undergo a series of "medical" experiments. They are usually brought back within a few hours, in most cases with their memory of the events temporarily erased - the so-called "Missing Time" phenomenon.
Although presently the known database contains cases dating as far back as the 1930s, the first highly popularized abduction event - the Betty and Barney Hill case - occurred in 1961. Until that time, and for a few years beyond, cases involving actual contact with "aliens" were looked on with contempt by most serious ufologists, who were desperately seeking scientific consensus on the UFO issue and did not want to endanger their efforts by bringing "Little Green Men" into the picture.
There was also the desire to distance themselves from the spurious "Contactee" phenomenon, which reached its peak in the 1950s. These "contact" episodes were related by mostly well-meaning but eccentric individuals bringing messages of brotherhood, peace, and planetary awareness from spiritually advanced extraterrestrials. Some told wild and woolly stories of rides aboard flying saucers with comely female Venusians. A few still peddle their stories to this day.
In stark contrast to the Contactee phenomenon, the Abduction syndrome is characterized by a general unwillingness on the part of percipients to come forward and tell their stories publicly. Indeed, most are not certain at first exactly what has happened, only that they are bothered by strange memories, dreams, or baseless phobias, and seek relief through hypnosis or other clinical means.
It is mostly through hypnosis that the abduction scenario generally pours out (although it is important to note that 28% of all cases are recalled consciously), and it is this use of hypnosis that has been at the center of the firestorm of controversy over AAS.
Detractors claim that hypnosis is a highly unreliable means of extracting accurate recall of events; it is too prone to confabulation, and instills a desire in the claimant to "please" the hypnotist. Proponents argue that confabulation cannot account for the striking similarities between abduction narratives, nor for what they claim are physical marks or scars associated with several abduction experiences.
They further assert that purposeful attempts to steer the witness astray by asking leading questions have only resulted in denials and bolstering of the witness' own version. The most compelling evidence in favor of the reality of alien abductions is, as mentioned, the striking correlation between accounts, and especially the description of the abducting entities, who are almost universally depicted as short, hairless, and grey-skinned, with immense pupil-less eyes (see drawing).
The classic "greylien" is slender, with long, thin limbs, skin that has been described as "marshmallowy" or "papier-mâché," large, bulbous craniums slits for nostrils and mouth, no apparent ears nor genitalia. They are variously portrayed as wearing tight- fitting uniforms or having no apparent clothing; floating effortlessly a few inches above the ground or sweeping almost instantaneously from place to place; acting cautious, curious, disinterested, or a strange combination of all three. Communication is almost universally telepathic, yet very little in the way of useful information about their nature or purpose is ever conveyed.
In one of the few instances where a nugget of information about the alleged "visitors" MIGHT have been revealed, Betty Hill was shown a "star map" by one of her abductors, which she recreated under hypnosis. It depicted a couple of large stars with several lines drawn between them, which the entity told her were "trade routes." A score of smaller stars were scattered about the drawing.
Years later, a teacher named Marjorie Fish claimed to have correlated the drawing with a known section of space, including stars that had not yet been charted at the time of the Hill abduction. If authenticated, it would place the aliens in a star system known as Zeta Reticuli.
Several elements, however, militate against the reality of the abduction scenario. The most distressing is the lack of physical evidence where such should exist. Aside from a few vaguely interesting scars and marks, no physical evidence exists to lend empirical weight to the stories being told, thereby placing the phenomenon squarely in the realm of the unproved. Tantalizing stories of implants and pregnancies that ended mysteriously have thus far not held up under close scrutiny. State-of-the-art abduction research is presently focused on finding psychological causes for AAS.
Some theories that have promise include Fantasy Prone Personality, Sleep Paralysis, Hypnogognic States, and Border Deficit Disorder. Such efforts, however, have been hampered by the fact that, thus far, studies of abduction claimants have shown no strong tendencies in any of these directions; in fact, the average "abductee" is quite healthy mentally.
This fact, coupled with favorable media exposure, has begun to attract more psychologists and other mental health professionals to the field, largely through symposia and science journals. Such experts would probably otherwise shun the UFO field, but Alien Abduction Syndrome has proven a worthy challenge to even the most diehard skeptic. The accompanying drawing portrays an artist's rendering of one of the grey aliens as described by an abductee.
USA 1952 Adamski, George
The story told by George Adamski of his alleged contact with extraterrestrials is not strictly a case of abduction, however, in his conversations with the aliens, Adamski learns that they have been abduction human beings. His story begins on November 20, 1952 at 12:30 PM in the California desert near Arizona. He and six friends were driving near Desert Center California when a cigar shaped craft landed in the desert near the road. Adamski took two cameras and ran to investigate.
He was greeted by a tall, blond alien with a shiny suit. (This sounds incredible, but later abductees have also mentioned tall, blond, Nordic looking aliens.) He was told through a combination of sign language and telepathy that the alien's name was Orthon and that he came from Venus. Orthon told Adamski that nuclear testing on Earth was effecting the ecological balance of other planets.
In later encounters, Adamski was supposedly taken, aboard flying saucers, to other planets in the solar system including Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. On one trip, he was taken to the far side of the Moon where he supposedly witnessed lakes, cities, snow-capped mountains and even people walking along streets. Obviously these wild tales have since been proven to be wholly inaccurate and it calls into question his entire experience. However, the few details which match closely with more recent abductions add support to the basis of his stories.
BRA 1978 Alvaro, Jose
On March 3, 1978, Jose Alvaro was checking on his father's house in Fragata Pelotas, Brazil to be sure that was locked. As he walked towards the house, he remembers being struck by a blue beam which knocked him out. (It is interesting to note the similarity to the case of Travis Walton as he was also struck by a blue beam and knocked out.)
When he woke up, he recalled many violent images of his abduction. Under hypnosis conducted by UFO investigators and psychologists, Alvaro recalled being led into a room where he was rubbed down and forced to have sex with a female humanoid. (This case also bears a remarkable resemblance to the case of Antonio Villas Boas which occurred in Argentine in the late 1950s)
JAP 1978 Amano, Hideichi
In October of 1978 in Japan, Hideichi Amano and his baby daughter were sitting in their parked car when the interior seemed to be engulfed in a glowing light. His daughter seemed to have been knocked out and was being probed by a beam of light. Amano then recalls being approached by a small being with strange eyes and a small nose. This being pressed some kind of probe or instrument to Amano's forehead which paralyzed him. He then reports nothing more than a rush of images similar to those of the Alvaro case. Mr. Amano believes that some kind of instrument was implanted inside his head so that he can be recalled at some later date.
SWE 1974 Anders
An abductee who wishes to be known as Anders was walking along a dark road on March 23, 1974 north of Stockholm. He remembers being surrounded by a bright light which seems to have lifted him up to a UFO which was floating overhead. He was approached by entities which performed a type of medical examination on him. It included the insertion of a probe or instrument into his temple.
When he arrived at home, he was bleeding from his forehead and had a burn mark on his cheek. He was subsequently hypnotized in April and May 1974. It was at this point that he decided to change the approach of his research and turned to areas that are not usually explored by UFO researchers. He found that he was able to manipulate a compass needle by placing his hands around it and was able to see auras surrounding people. On the surface, this case might seem a bit fantastic.
However, there are several pieces of corroborating evidence. Firstly, this occurred in the middle of a large wave of UFO sightings in the are of the abduction. Within minutes of the abduction, several witnesses recalled seeing lights in the sky in the vicinity of the abduction. One witness reported a sighting which directly verifies Anders story.
He recalls seeing a cone shaped light overhead at the time that he was surrounded by the bright light. At that exact time, a witness looked across a field and saw a cone shaped light in exactly the position reported by Anders. She did not report seeing Anders, however a stand of trees would have blocked her view of him anyway. It is difficult to label this abduction a hoax.
USA 1967 Andreasson, Betty
Early in the evening of January 25, 1967, Betty was at home in Ashburnham, Massachusetts with her parents and children when her father reported seeing a light outside the kitchen window then, upon investigation, found several humanoid beings outside the house. Betty then saw several humanoids enter the house by simply walking through the walls.
This sounds like a description by someone in the throes of hysteria, however, it is commonly reported among abductees that either they or the beings were able to move through solid objects. Betty recalled nothing more until she was hypnotically regressed. Under hypnosis, she reported an examination similar to most other abduction reports including a probe which was inserted up her nose and another into her navel. (Very similar to the Betty Hill examination)
USA 1955 Angelucci, Orfeo
After George Adamski published his book about meetings with extraterrestrials, there were a virtual flood of similar reports. One of these was Orfeo Angelucci who published a book entitled "Secret of the Saucers". In this book, he claims to have had many contacts with extraterrestrials in California. He claims to have had meetings in public places including a cafe and a bus station. On one occasion, he even claims to have met Jesus who told him that he was an extraterrestrial.
He claims to have made many journeys to the alien's home world where he met a woman named Lyra and her friend Orion. He was made privy to certain revelations, among them, the fact that if the people of the Earth did not shape up, a major catastrophe would occur in 1986. It seems pretty clear from the claims made, that this was nothing more than an attempt to draw attention and make some money with a sensational book. This case is most likely a hoax.
ENG 1957 Appleton, Cynthia
In November of 1957 in Birmingham, England a housewife reported a contact with an extraterrestrial in her home. Apparently. No UFO was reported, but the experience was so similar the Adamski contacts that it is valid to include it in UFO research. During the afternoon, a being appeared in her living room. The description of this alleged extraterrestrial is very similar to other descriptions of this type of being. It was tall and blond with fair skin and long features.
This 'Nordic' type alien has been reported by thousands of other contactees and abductees over the years. There were a total of four contacts and during these, the alien gave her a lot of information about futuristic technology such as holograms, nuclear physics and cancer cures which are based on some type of frequency modulation. This case could very easily be a hoax, however it does bear a striking resemblance to other contacts with similar type beings.
ENG 1974 Avis, John & Elaine
In October 1974, John and Elaine Avis (not their real names) along with their three children were returning by car to their home in Essex. They had noticed a light in the sky which they talked about, but which did not particularly disturb them. Shortly thereafter, they drove through a greenish mist which covered the road.
Upon arriving at home they discovered that the journey had taken more than 2.5 hours longer than it should have. Under hypnosis, they told of begin stopped by a UFO, floating out of their car and into the ship. There, they were subjected to medical examinations and then returned to their car and allowed to continue on their way.
ENG 1977 Brooke, Angela
In October, 1977 Angela Brooke and her husband returned to their cottage in Keighley, West Yorkshire England in the early evening. they reported that a bright light had followed them home and that it remained above their house all night. It is possible that it was a normal astronomical object such as a star or planet and that it was a simple misinterpretation.
However, about a week later, Angela was found by her husband staring at the late night sky as if in a trance. She did not have any memory of the events of that evening, however, she believes that something did occur. There was no formal investigation to indicate an abduction, however, several abductions have begun in just this manner.
ENG 1983 Burtoo, Alfred
In August of 1983, Alfred Burtoo was fishing in the Basingstoke Canal in Aldershot England. In the early morning hours, he witnessed a light approaching to within a short distance of him. Shortly thereafter, he saw two figures walking towards him which indicated that they wanted him to follow them.
They wore one piece green coveralls. They led him up to a craft which had landed and rested on skids. Inside the craft he was subjected to a medical examination. Upon completion of the exam, he was released and told that he was too old (he was in his seventies at the time) for their purpose.
Following the experience he had none of the psychological complications that most abductees suffer. In fact his main emotion was one of irritation from being rejected. A few years later, he died and an investigator followed up by asking his wife if he had ever confessed that the story was a hoax. She stated that he had not and supported his claims.
BRA 1974 Ciccioli, Gilberto
In October 1974, Gilberto Ciccioli awoke in the early morning hours to investigate strange noises near his home. He was hit by a bright beam of light which paralyzed him. He remembers being taken aboard a ship and subjected to an examination which included the taking of sperm and blood samples. His case is special in that his memory of the events is not based on hypnosis, but on conscious recall.
ENG 1957 Cook, James
In September of 1957 James Cook was apparently contacted by extraterrestrials using telepathy and told to meet them at the top of a hill near Runcorn in Cheshire England. He went to the location where he met them and was taken aboard their ship and flown to their home planet which they called Zomdic. Mr. Cook was warned about the development of nuclear weapons and that they could upset the balance of nature.
He was subsequently returned to Earth and released. He claims to have kept up regular telepathic contact with the aliens for many years after the experience. He later started a church and then disappeared. Given the nature of this report and the fact that it does not match many other abduction scenarios, it is most likely a hoax.
BRA 1969 Da Silva, Joao Valerio
In November of 1982 Joao Valerio Da Silva was struck by a beam of light and paralyzed. This occurred at his home in Botucatu, Brazil. He was taken aboard a UFO where he was approached by several beings including a naked woman. He passed out shortly thereafter. He was found by his family on the floor of his house, unconscious. His clothes were in a pile next to him and he was covered with red marks. He has no memory of the events which transpired between the time that the beam hit him and when he was found by his family.
BRA 1969 Da Silva, Jose
In May of 1969, Jose Antonio Da Silva was fishing near Belo Horizonte, Brazil when he noticed two beings moving behind him. He remembers being struck by a beam of light which caused him to become paralyzed and forced him down to his knees. He was taken by two short aliens which wore silver suits onto a UFO which had landed. The craft resembled a cylinder set up on end.
Once aboard, the craft took off and Da Silva experienced some acceleration effects such as increased weight, G-Force and pressure of acceleration. During the flight, he was given a type of helmet to wear. The craft then landed again and Da Silva was blindfolded and led into another room. It is at this point that things become unusual.
The room appeared to be made of stone and on the walls were paintings of animals and other scenes of Earth. He was approached by a short alien which appeared to resemble a dwarf or gnome from European literature. He had long red hair, a long beard, greenish eyes and pale skin. Many others very much like him came into the room. The room itself seemed to be brightly illuminated, however, he could not see any direct light fixtures.
At one point, Da Silva reported seeing the corpses of four humans lying on a shelf. The ship then landed, released Da Silva and took off again. Da Silva was now over 200 miles from where he had started out and apparently over four days had passed since the event began.
USA Davis, Kathie
Davis (not her real name) is the subject of a book by Budd Hopkins entitled "Intuders - The Incredible Visitations at Copeley Wood". According to the book, Kathie was first abducted at the age of six when skin and blood samples were taken leaving a scar on her leg which she still has. Then, when she was 18 years old, she was abducted again and this time there was some type of penetration into her uterus which may have been a form of artificial insemination.
Then several months later, she was apparently abducted again so that the unborn fetus could be removed. Several years later she was again abducted and this time shown a number of babies. She was somehow instructed to interact with these children in a form of bonding. During this time, Kathie had divorced her husband and was living with her parents in their house at Copely Wood. At one point she remembers sitting in her room watching television when she saw a short, grey alien walk down the hallway past her room.
It appears that her children were also being subjected to abductions. At one point, she is abducted and shown a young child of about pre-adolescent age. In a drawing she made, she describes the child as having white, wispy hair which does not cover her head effectively, allowing the scalp to be seen. The head is large in relation to the body and the nose and lips are quite small. Kathie was able to ask the aliens if she could take the child with her, but was told that she could not because the child would not survive in the Earth environment.
She was even told that she (Kathie) could not stay aboard the ship long, because she would become ill from the atmosphere. There is evidence that Kathie's mother may have been a long term abduction victim which seems to indicate that the aliens might be studying genetics. Kathie Davis does not have anything really to gain from a hoax and does not have a fantasy prone personality.
The jury is still out on the question of authenticity of this report, but the scope of it certainly warrants attention. In a final note, Kathie reports that the aliens were able to walk directly through walls in much the same way that Betty Andreasson reported in 1967.
ARG 1975 Diaz, Carlos Alberto
At approximately 4:00 AM, one morning in January of 1975, Mr. Carlos Alberto Diaz was returning home to Bahia Blanca, Argentina with a newly printed newspaper when he heard a strong humming sound. He was hit by a beam of light and paralyzed. He was floated up and into a waiting UFO. On board the craft, he was subjected to an examination and some hair was removed from him by a being wearing a one piece overall.
Four hours later he was found on a road by a passing motorist over three hundred miles away from where he had been. He still carried the newspaper which had only been printed that morning. Now it is possible that he was able to drive that distance in a car traveling 75 miles per hour. He is not the typical UFO believer. In fact he stated that if someone had told him that story he would not believe it himself if it had not happened to him.
BRA 1975 Ferreira, Antonio
In January of 1975, Antonio Ferreiro who lived in Sao Luis Brazil was at home when it seems that a UFO hit the wall of his house. Then a beam of bright light hit Ferreira and he was dragged aboard the UFO. His captors were short, dark haired, dark skinned aliens who questioned him roughly. At one point he was hit by one of the aliens after he gave an answer to a question that the alien did not like.
He attempted to make a deal with the aliens to exchange live animals for trips aboard their UFO. The aliens accepted this deal and over time exchanged many items for animals including a ray gun that could destroy anything. He reports that the gun has been lost. This encounter is most likely the result of an overactive imagination or a hoax.
BRA 1971 Gaetano, Paulo
In the early morning hours of November 17, 1971, Paulo Gaetano and a friend, Mr. E.B. as he wishes to be known were driving near the town of Bananeiras, Brazil when the car began to die. It finally stalled near an object on the road. A beam on light hit the car, the door opened and Mr. Gaetano was forcibly removed from the vehicle by beings. He was dragged aboard the object and subjected to a physical examination which left a scar.
The most interesting thing about this event is the fact that Mr. E.B. did not realize that his friend had been taken out of the car and that his recollection was that it was a bus by the side of the road and not a flying saucer. This might be a case of the aliens implanting a false memory in the mind of Mr. E.B. or it might be a case of fantasy prone personality on the part of Mr. Gaetano.
RA 1976 Giuliana, Helene
In the late evening in June, 1975, Helene Giuliana was on her way home from a movie late in the evening when her car began to malfunction. It died crossing a bridge near Romans, France. She then saw a bright orange glow in the sky which vanished. Upon arriving home, she realized that her journey had taken far longer than she thought.
She underwent hypnotic regression and was able to recall being taken from her car and put aboard a UFO where she was strapped down to a table while an examination was made of her abdominal region by small grey aliens. This is a typical abduction story and the details match closely those of abductees from around the world.
ENG 1980 Godfrey, Alan
Early in the morning of November 29, 1980, Police Constable Alan Godfrey was driving his police car near Todmorden, Lancashire when he came across what he believed was a bus turned sideways across the road. As he got nearer, he was able to make out that it was not a bus, but a diamond shaped object which was about 20 feet wide and 14 feet tall.
It was hovering approximately 5 feet off the ground. His radio was not operating so he drew a picture of the object on his clipboard. Suddenly Godfrey realized that he was 100 yards down the road from his car and the UFO had vanished. He underwent hypnotic regression and was able to recall being taken on board the UFO where he was laid on a table. A tall, bearded, human looking man was standing looking down at him.
He was able to detect other, more strange looking creatures in the room, including what looked like a dog. He seemed to recall a type of examination, but nothing else until he found himself outside on the road again. Mr. Godfrey is an intelligent, reliable witness with an unbiased attitude about what happened. He states that he is unsure about what really happened.
ENG 1981Hayward,Viv
Rosemary Hawkins along with Viv Hayward and Valerie Walters were returning home to Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England after an evening out. Along the drive, they saw red and white lights across a field that seemed to be keeping up with them. They tried to speed up and get away from the lights, but the car seemed to lose power.
The lights soon vanished and the car regained its power whereupon the women drove directly to their local police station and noticed that their total trip seemed to have taken more time than it should have. From the time that the event took place until they reached the police station there seemed to be a period of missing time of about twenty minutes.
Under hypnotic regression, Viv Hayward recalled the car being lifted up into the clouds and drawn into the underside of a UFO. She recalls that she was the only one in the car at the time. She was then removed from the car and underwent a physical examination by beings about four feet tall who wore green cloaks.
After the exam, she was returned to the car and the card returned to the road. Rosemary Hawkins recalls being taken from the car alone and was examined briefly by robots on wheels. Valerie Walters also has a recollection of the events of that evening, but her memory is different from the others. She recalls that Rosemary Hawkins was missing from the car and that it was not moving.
Valerie recalls that she was floated out of the car and into a room where she saw tall, dark aliens wearing the green cloaks that Rosemary recalled seeing on short, light colored aliens. Valerie believes that some procedure was performed on her reproductive organs. All of the doctors and psychologists who examined and worked with these women believe that they were sincere, honest and telling the truth as they believed it.
USA 1974 Higdon, Carl
Carl Higdon was elk hunting on October 25, 1974 in Wyoming when he spotted several elk standing in a clearing. He raised his rifle, took careful aim and fired. However, as the bullet left the barrel of the gun it seemed to be moving very slowly. It floated slowly out and fell to the ground a few feet away.
Mr. Higdon seemed to be standing in an area of complete silence and felt a tingling sensation all over his body. From his left he heard someone approaching who he thought might be another hunter. This other "hunter" turned out to be wild-looking alien with yellow skin, small eyes and no ears.
Higdon recalls being somehow transported into a cube shaped UFO which had landed nearby. Inside, he saw five elk which were frozen in a compartment beside him. He was attached to some type of machine and shown the planet that the aliens come from with some type of imaging system.
Later, a search party found Higdon in hid truck in the middle of a deep ravine. Under hypnosis, Higdon was able to recall that he had seen human beings on the alien's home planet and they were acting as though they belonged there. Higdon believes that he would have been used for some type of medical experiment except that he had had a vasectomy.
USA 1961 Hill, Betty and Barney
On the night of September 19, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were returning home to Portsmouth, New Hampshire from a vacation in Canada. Traveling along U.S. route 3, they noticed a bright object which was moving through the sky to the southwest. It looked like a star except that it was moving. Radar operators at Pease Air Force Base which was situated nearby, reported that there was something moving through the air at that time and in approximately the position reported by the Hills. Barney was driving and he stopped the car several times so that his wife could observe the object, which seemed to be pacing the car, through binoculars. There were various flashing lights to be seen on the object and it seemed to be an airplane until it curved around and came towards them.
They were less than two miles from North Woodstock when the object came around in front of the car and then moved slightly off the road and hovered. The two stopped the car and Mr. Hill got out with the binoculars for a better look. From inside the car, Mrs. Hill could hear her husband saying "I don't believe it!". He was able to see portholes on the craft and, inside, several humanoid figures who appeared to be working busily. Mr. Hill got quickly back into the car and the two took off down the highway as fast as possible. They made it home that night, but it was not until much later that the story took a strange turn. Mr. Hill was for some time unable to account for a more than two hour time loss between the sighting of the object and their arrival at home.
The couple decided to seek professional help and were referred by their doctor to Boston psychiatrist, Dr. Benjamin Simon in December, 1963 to try hypnotic regression therapy. Mr. Hill's session was recorded on audio tape. Under hypnosis, Hill recalled being led up a ramp into the ship and into a type of examination room. He was lying on a table where he could feel them examining him with their hands. They completed a fairly thorough examination and Mr. Hill was led out of the room, back down the ramp and back to the car where Mrs. Hill was waiting. She came around and opened the car door for him.
Mrs. Hill's recollections were quite similar. She told of an examination and also of one of the crew members who seemed to speak English. She believed that a picture was taken of her skin and a sample collected for later study. further, she claimed that she was also examined internally by the use of a needle inserted into her navel. When she asked the leader where they came from, he showed her a star map which she was able to duplicate under hypnosis.
She was then led back down the ramp and to the car. In conclusion, it should be noted that Dr. Simon believed that the abduction portion of the Hill's story was a fantasy derived from Mrs. Hill's telling to her husband of her dreams. However, over the years so many others, many of whom had never heard of the Hills or their experience, told very similar stories describing humanoids and events strikingly similar to the Hill's.
USA 1971 Hodges, John
In 1971, John Hodges and a friend named Peter Rodriquez were visiting a friend in South Los Angeles. Later that evening, Hodges was driving Rodriguez home and at about two o'clock in the morning, they saw two objects on the road which looked similar to giant human brains. Hodges drove Rodriguez on to his house and returned to his own house. He realized that he had lost more than two hours of time. Under hypnotic regression, Hodges recalled being contacted telepathically by some beings or entities and being told that they would contact him again. There was also some memory of a room with beings in it.
USA 1978 Hodges, John
In 1978, following a telepathic encounter in 1971, John Hodges was somehow transported to the same room that he recalled during his 1971 experience. There he was given a warning about the dangers of nuclear war and was told that devices were being implanted in human beings to enhance their psychic abilities
IN 1980 Ivanoff, Aino
In April of 1980 in Finland, Aino Ivanoff was driving her car when it was suddenly surrounded by a white, cloud like mist. She was apparently transported to a room where she underwent a physical examination by small alien beings. They told her that humans should not be having wars. Then they also told her that they were unable to have children. There is very little other information on this case.
USA 1968 Kurz, Shane
The first several months of 1968 had seen some extraordinary UFO activity in New York State where Shane Kurz lived. She and her mother both filed reports about them. During the evening of May 2, she had been outside of her house watching the UFOs when she suddenly felt sleepy and went inside to go to bed. She was awakened by her mother who was concerned that she was lying on top of her bedspread with her clothes and herself covered in mud. Over the next few days, she suffered many aches and pains and felt that she needed to find out exactly what had happened that night.
She had no memory of the events of that evening. Several years later, she underwent hypnotic regression and was able to recall being drawn to her window by a voice in her head. She then went outside and walked towards a UFO which had landed a short distance away. It was in crossing this field that she became covered in mud. She was taken into a room which resembled a hospital operating room and was subjected to a medical examination.
She further recalls being raped by the leader of the aliens. Her uneasiness about the encounter ended about nine months later and it has been speculated that a pregnancy took place as a result of the rape. She does state that at the time, she seemed to enjoy the encounter as a result of a clear liquid that she had been covered with. This is very similar to the Antonio Villas Boas case.
ARG 1957 Villas Boas, Antonio
On October 15, 1957, an Argentinean farmer named Antonio Villas Boas was plowing his field at about 10 PM when he saw a light hovering over his field. He attempted to chase it, but it was too fast and got away easily. The following evening, the same thing happened only this time the object landed. It stood on metal legs and had a dome on top which appeared to rotate and change color from green to red. He attempted to jump from his tractor and run away, but three small creatures grabbed him and dragged him into the craft. They wore silver suits and helmets. Villas Boas was forcibly undressed and covered with a clear liquid. He was then taken into another room where he underwent a physical examination.
After this, he was approached by a nearly human looking woman who caressed and aroused him. They engaged in sexual intercourse. He was then given back his clothes and taken on a tour of the ship. He tried to take a piece of equipment to prove that he really was there, however, he was prevented from doing so. He was released shortly thereafter. In the days and weeks that followed, he noticed strange marks and wounds on his hands and arms. Antonio Villas Boas died recently and had never withdrawn his claims.
USA 1964 S., Mr.
On September 5, 1964, a man wanting to be identified as Mr. S. was attempting to rejoin his buddies after a day of hunting when he sighted a UFO. It seemed to be following him and he tried to hide in a tree. He strapped himself to the tree so that he would not fall out. Later he saw three flying objects with rotating lights approaching him. He believed that this was a search party sent out to find him, so he attracted their attention.
The objects landed near him and two small beings with silver suits along with what appeared to be a robot came out of one of the craft and tried to get Mr. S. down out of the tree. He tried to frighten them off with flaming arrows which he shot at them. They subsequently left in one of the craft, the back blast of which apparently knocked Mr. S. out. When he awoke the following day, the UFO and its occupants were gone. There is no corroborating evidence or additional witnesses to this event.
USA 1975 Walton, Travis
The "Travis Walton Case" as its been dubbed took place on November 15 1975 at a logging sight near Herber, AZ. Travis Walton, age 22 at the time, was a member of a seven-man crew headed by Michael H. Rogers, age 28. The crew was thinning and stacking timber in the Turkey Springs area of the Sitgreaves National Forest, located in the mountains of east-central Arizona. As Rogers described the incident in a tape-recorded interview three days later, the crew had quit work around dusk, at about 6:00 PM., on Wednesday, November 5, 1975, was heading up a rough logging road for the ride back home to Snowflake, roughly forty-five miles away, via the small village of Herber.
Allen Dalis, age 21, sitting in the rear of the truck, reportedly was the first to see a yellowish glow through the heavy timber. When the truck reached a clearing, both Dalis and Travis Walton, who was sitting in the front seat next to the door, reported seeing a saucer-shaped object hovering less than one hundred feet off the road, directly over a "slash-pile" of cut timber.
Rogers said the object was about fifteen feet in diameter and "looked like a flying saucer something I'd seen pictures of." Travis yelled for Rogers to stop the truck, but before he could do so young Walton opened the door, leaped out and walked toward and neared the object. Travis later recalls: "I got out of the truck and walked towards it. This may have been a foolish thing but I thought that it might just take off. I got out and tried to get a better look. This was not just a point of light in the sky.. it was very close, you could have thrown a rock and hit it."
All the other FIVE men watched as Travis approached the object. Suddenly, however, Travis was struck by an intense blue-green light that resembled a lighting stroke. The resulting explosive force of the defensive beam threw Travis back ten feet unconscious. Stunned and very fearful of what had happened, Mike Rogers turned the truck around and made a hasty exit to get away from the thing. About 1/4 mile down the road Mike regained his sensed realizing what he had just done leaving his friend back there all alone. Mike: "I realized about 1/4 mile down the road that I had just taken off and left him back there. I turned the truck around and headed back.. several of the men didn't want that at all.. they were very afraid of what could happen to them if they went back to the site."
After finding the sight once again, no trace of Travis remained. "The thing was gone. Travis was gone. It was a very traumatic experience; the most traumatic experience I've ever encountered. Some thing not of this world simply had taken Travis and he was just not there. What would we do? All we could think of was to go to the authorities." And so they did. Mike and the rest of the men contacted the Sheriff's office in nearby Holbrook.
The Sheriff from Holbrook was cautious but not completely dis-believing. A massive man hunt was undertaken under the Sheriff's directions to search for any sign of Travis. No signs were left but the blacken burnt slash left by the object from where it hovered above. The Sheriff from Holbrook then suspected the men and murdered Travis and buried his body in the woods and that they were using the UFO story as an alibi. A tough series of grueling hours were spent in interrogation but resulted in nothing very conclusive to the Sheriff.
All five men agreed to take a lie detector test to try and prove what they saw was indeed very real to them and traumatic. C.E. Gilson administered the polygraph examination reporting that it was the first time he had some many people to work with regarding the same event. Careful hours of work were put into the polygraph examination to eliminate any possibilities of complications due to anxiety.
The test report as followed: "These polygraph examinations positively prove that these five men did see something they believe was a UFO and that Travis Walton was not injured or murdered by any of these men, on that Wednesday 5th of November 1975. If an actual UFO did not exist and the UFO was a manmade hoax, five of these men had no prior knowledge of a hoax." Signed C.E. Gilson, polygraph examiner.
Five days had passed before Travis finally returned. It was shortly after midnight when Travis called his sister's home and her husband, Grant Neff, answered. Travis's voice sounded so befuddled, Neff later said, that he first thought the caller was an intoxicated hoaxer and so he started to hang up until Travis screamed his identity and begged for help.
Travis was calling from a pay phone at the Enco gas station near Heber. Later they found Travis collapsed on the floor of the phone booth. Travis stood to stand "inspection" later where there was no bruises or burns except for a small red scab-mark on the inside crease of the right elbow. Later blood testing would reveal no drugs present in Travis's body ruling out drug use as a hoax motive. Travis had lost ten pounds during the five days he was missing and was physically drained.
Later after lots of recuperation, Travis would relate a remarkable story: "When I felt the numbing shock, I black out. The next thing I remember was regaining consciousness. I was laying on my back on a table, my head was not very clear and I was in a lot of pain. The room I was in resembled a hospital and that's exactly where I thought I was." Travis then observed two beings standing over him that terrified him to the breaking point.
"I was standing in front of these two things standing there looking at me, these huge eyes just seem to just look right through me. I didn't get much impression of emotion; just a kind of observing sort of emotion to them. They just stood there looking at me and ham those huge eyes! It looked very much like they knew exactly what I was thinking and feeling. These huge eyes were like a window opening and shutting.. I just couldn't bare their gaze."
Travis grabbed a tubular shaped object that was laying over his chest and took a defensive posture. The two alien beings telepathically felt what Travis was experiencing and left the room noticing an out-of-control situation. Travis then took off through a door down the hallway into another room. He approached what appeared to be a control console in the arms of a chair. "There was a lever there and when I moved that the star pattern in front of me moved. It was very disorienting because I saw this pattern move and it felt like I was moving as well..
I figured I better not play with that, feeling that I might crash this thing or something. I had by that time surmised that I was in some sort of craft and connected it with what happened earlier in the woods." A new being then entered the room but appeared very much humanoid in appearance. "This man was not like those humanoid things I saw earlier. This looked like a human being.. like a man in a blue uniform. I went up to him thinking that I was being saved, that I was being rescued." Travis interrogated this tall figure but got no response. "I could not get him to talk to me.. it was clear he couldn't really understand what I was saying."
Travis probed quickly on down the hallway. "A door opened halfway down the hall and the air was very much fresher and easier to breathe than the air I was in. The air inside the craft was very heavy and moist.. stifling." He then probed quickly on down through some doors in a hallway to another room. There were two more of these human figures who were very muscular in appearance. Travis was detained by the three figures and placed into an unusual contraption resembling an examination chair. He was then put out of consciousness once again and later remembered waking up five days later dumped in the middle of nowhere. "
The thing that has brought more frustration into my life as a result of all of this happening is the fact that people don't see me anymore, me as a person. I get this feeling of invisibility because of this thing. Every contact I have with people is filtered through the distorting lens of something that just happened to me 15 years ago. I'm not a deceiving liar or crackpot space cadet sort of person. This just happened to me; it could have happened to anyone!" To this day.. many hail Travis's courage while others still accuse him of being a liar.
UPDATE: An Exploration Research staff member met briefly with Travis Walton and had this to say: "I found Mr. Walton to be a down-to-earth, sincere, intelligent gentleman with a good sense of humor and as well-adjusted as anyone. He was, however, quiet in manner and thought out responses to questions very thoroughly before speaking. This encounter has obviously changed his life profoundly. He gives the impression of something similar to "Shell-Shock" and he is definitely not a publicity seeker."
